Vice President Harris Stands Up to Big Corporations: Calls for a Ban on Price Gouging.
Vice President Harris is set to challenge corporate landlords and look into price fixing to help lower costs for American families.
In a debate set for Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina, Vice President Harris is expected to outline her plans for a federal ban on corporate price gouging in food, housing, and prescription drugs. This proposal aims to combat inflation and reduce costs for Americans.
As reported by CBS News, this proposal is Vice President Harris’s first major policy initiative since joining the presidential race. Harris-Walz campaign officials stated that the policy aims to reduce costs for middle-class families. “When I am president, I will keep working to lower prices,” Harris said at a rally in Arizona earlier this month.
Pledging to prioritize middle-class and working-class families, she declared, “I will challenge big corporations that engage in illegal price gouging, corporate landlords who unfairly raise rents, and Big Pharma by capping prescription drug costs for all Americans.” Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz told supporters that Harris is “a leader who wakes up every day fighting for the American people… She will confront fraudsters, stand up to corporate interests, and put Middle America first.”
Recent polls show that inflation is still a top concern for voters, with only 9% of registered voters saying the national economy is in “very good” shape. However, a poll earlier this month indicated that Vice President Harris is trailing behind Donald Trump, with 45% of registered voters believing the former president would leave them in a better financial position, compared to just 25% supporting Harris.
Harris’s recent comments on big corporations come after her promise to eliminate taxes on tips and raise the minimum wage. “When I am president, we will continue fighting for working families, including raising the minimum wage and eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers,” Harris said at her well-attended rally on August 10 in Las Vegas at the University of Las Vegas Thomas & Mack Center.
Market Watch highlighted Vice President Harris’s additional plans to support small businesses with resources to help them grow into strong competitors. Meanwhile, her administration will closely investigate price fixing among major food companies and focus on enforcing regulations.
