Tragedy Strikes: Mariah Carey Heartbroken After Losing Mother and Sister on the Same Day.
Mariah Carey is devastated after losing her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, on the same day this past weekend.
Mariah Carey shared heartbreaking news that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, both passed away on the same day over the weekend.
On Monday, the Grammy Award-winning singer released an official statement to inform the public of the devastating loss.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah told People.
“I’m grateful that I had the chance to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” the singer added. “I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
According to the Times Union, Mariah’s estranged sister, Alison, 63, passed away due to organ failure while in hospice care. The exact cause of Patricia’s death remains unknown.
Mariah has previously spoken about her complicated relationship with her mother, a trained opera singer who attended Juilliard and worked as a vocal coach before having Alison, Mariah, and their brother, Morgan, with her husband, Alfred Roy Carey. Mariah’s parents separated when she was three years old.
Mariah grew up in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and mostly lived with her mother after her parents’ divorce. Her father, Alfred, passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer reflected on her relationship with her mother, writing, “Like many parts of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and mixed emotions. It’s never been just black-and-white — it’s been a whole spectrum of feelings.”
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” she added.
Mariah has acknowledged her mother as her first inspiration in becoming a singer.
“I would sing little tunes around the house, much to my mother’s delight. She always encouraged me,” she wrote in her memoir.
In 2010, the singer and her mother reunited for a special duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” on ABC’s Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special. Despite their complicated history, Mariah dedicated a portion of her memoir to her mother.
“And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will love you the best I can, always.”
She also explained why she chose to stay estranged from her siblings, saying it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to have no contact” with either Alison or Morgan.
