From Legacy to Triumph: Black Twin Sisters Make History as First-Generation Doctors in Their Family.

Breaking Barriers: Meet Drs. Brittani and Brandi Jackson, Twin Sisters and Pioneering First-Generation Doctors, Uniting their Medical Expertise at a Renowned Hospital in Chicagoland.

Nurtured by their hometown of Twinsburg, Ohio, the twin sisters’ fascination with science blossomed from an early age. Despite facing racial discrimination as the sole African Americans in their classrooms, they excelled academically, graduating as salutatorians from Twinsburg High School.

Initially, the notion of pursuing a medical career eluded them, as the absence of Black female doctors in their lives left a void. However, a transformative encounter with a Black female doctor ignited a newfound sense of purpose and propelled them towards medical school.

“It’s challenging to envision a future where you don’t see yourself represented. But as I delved deeper into the medical field, I realized that I could serve as a visible inspiration to those who resemble me, showing them that they can achieve anything. That’s my ultimate aspiration,” expressed Brittani to the Chicago Crusader.

For the first time, the twins embarked on separate paths, with Brittani attending the University of Michigan Medical School, while Brandi pursued her education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Upon completing their medical studies, destiny reunited them at the University of Illinois, where both sisters were elected as chief residents, Brandi in the Department of Psychiatry and Brittani in the College of Medicine-Family Medicine.

In 2018, they embarked on an empowering mission by establishing a website with the aim of inspiring individuals of color to pursue careers in medicine. The website created a virtual community where users could freely submit health care-related questions, receiving expert responses from medical professionals at no cost.

“We believe that simply achieving success ourselves is not enough. We are driven to assist others in their journey,” expressed Brandi. “This initiative is our way of giving back, acknowledging the countless individuals who supported us throughout our medical path. By paying it forward, we aspire to bring about a transformative shift in the landscape of medicine, collectively.”

Through their website, the dynamic duo is determined to break barriers and foster inclusivity, actively working towards transforming the future of the medical field.
