Billie Eilish Shares Her Story: Growing Up Famous, Women’s Issues, and Fighting Body-Shaming.

The 21-year-old has a strong attraction to women and finds joy in using her music to bring them together, all while expressing her frustration with those who criticize them.
At the age of just 21, Billie Eilish is still in the process of discovering herself. In a recent interview with Variety, the emerging singer discussed the challenges of maturing under the spotlight as her career soared. She shared, “I’ve realized that I’m still quite young, with a world of possibilities ahead. Perhaps because I had to embrace adulthood early on, I forgot that I’m still in my youth. I’ve lived as if I were in my 70s in many ways.
She went on to say, “I’ve recently come to the realization that I don’t need to do that.” Eilish also openly discussed her challenges in connecting with other women, expressing, “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I have so much love for them as individuals, and I’m physically attracted to them, but their beauty and presence can be quite intimidating.” Despite identifying as “she/her,” she confessed to never truly feeling like a woman or embracing femininity, often needing to convince herself of her own beauty. Eilish had previously hinted at these struggles in May when she revealed the pressure she faced to conform to societal expectations regarding her appearance and behavior.
Eilish rapidly gained SoundCloud fame in 2015 and subsequently signed with Interscope Records. She achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first artist born in the 2000s to top the Billboard 200 chart. Her accomplishments continued in 2022 when she secured an Oscar for her rendition of the James Bond theme song, “No Time To Die.”
Furthermore, Eilish collaborated with filmmaker Greta Gerwig on the soundtrack for the 2023 film “Barbie,” contributing the Grammy-nominated track, “What Was I Made For?” The song gained immense popularity on TikTok, with numerous women using it as the backdrop for their personal home videos.
While Eilish found it fulfilling to facilitate connections among “women around the world” through her music, she also voiced her perspective in an interview with Variety. She likened womanhood to an enduring battle and highlighted the ongoing injustices related to gendered expectations, particularly in the context of body-shaming.
She expressed to the outlet, “Men’s bodies never receive scrutiny,” she remarked. “Whether you’re muscular or not, rail-thin or have a dad bod, pudgy or any other shape, it’s all accepted and appreciated. Everyone is content with it.”
She went on to explain, “Do you know why? It’s because women are compassionate. We don’t care, because we perceive people for who they truly are!”
