Kathy Griffin opens up in rare comments about how she and her parents navigated the aftermath of her late brother, whom she previously called a “pedophile.”

Kathy Griffin made shocking claims about a family member in a recent video meant to honor the late Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
In the YouTube video posted earlier this month, the 65-year-old comedian reflected on how her older brother’s alleged pedophilia affected her and her late parents, John and Maggie.
After discussing the Reiners’ deaths — reportedly linked to their troubled son, Nick Reiner — and noting that she knew Rob Reiner but was not close to him, Griffin said she was ready to share something she hadn’t publicly spoken about since her first memoir, Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin.
“I had two other brothers — they were great. One has passed away, and I’m very close to my brother John, who is now my only living sibling,” Griffin explained in another part of the video. “I want to be clear: I’m not talking about my brother John or my brother Gary. I’m referring to my oldest brother, Kenneth.”
She went on to say that when she previously spoke about his alleged abusive behavior, much of her family was deeply upset with her.
Griffin, the youngest of five siblings, added that her eldest brother Kenneth — who has since died — struggled with crack addiction, lived on the streets, and was extremely violent.
Griffin suggested that Kenneth may have been dealing with an undiagnosed mental illness, which she said was worsened by his crack cocaine use.
Even so, she emphasized that her parents never stopped trying to help their eldest son.
“It was devastating to watch my parents, John and Maggie, spend his entire life trying to save him,” Griffin said.
Because Griffin was much younger than her oldest brother, she said she only knew him during his most troubled years, though her parents told her his problems began when he was still a teenager.
She recalled her mother often questioning what might have caused Kenneth’s behavior, and described an unsettling memory from childhood when his wife confided in her.
“I remember being about 10 years old when his first wife told me — and only me — that he beat her so severely it was almost unimaginable,” Griffin claimed.
The My Life on the D-List star alleged that after the assaults, Kenneth would force his wife outside during Chicago’s bitter winters while she was completely naked.
While Griffin acknowledged that many fans may be stunned that such graphic details were shared with a child who couldn’t intervene, she said she understood why Kenneth’s wife felt compelled to confide in her.
“The truth is the truth,” she added.
Griffin said that knowing about Kenneth’s alleged abuse ultimately caused a rift between her and the rest of her family, leading to years of estrangement.
“For years, I went in and out of estrangement from my family because I refused to confront or interact with my eldest brother, Kenneth, without completely unleashing on him,” she said.
Griffin’s father, John Patrick Griffin, passed away from heart failure in 2007, while her mother, Maggie, died in 2020. Her brother Gary died of esophageal cancer in 2014, and her older sister Joyce passed away from cancer in 2017.
Griffin also claimed that Kenneth’s longtime girlfriend alleged he physically abused her “during sex,” behavior the actress described as “twisted.”
According to Griffin, the girlfriend later shared additional allegations of sexual abuse, telling her that Kenneth had molested one boy and one girl that she was aware of.
The comedian tied her brother’s alleged actions to her long-standing feud with former President Donald Trump, saying that years of hearing the word “pedo” used by Trump supporters — alongside revelations about Jeffrey Epstein — hit especially close to home. She added that having an older brother accused of pedophilia is something “you never outgrow,” and said it’s not something a person ever truly gets over.
Griffin went on to say that her anger stemmed from thinking about the children involved, stressing that the saying “blood is thicker than water” didn’t apply to her situation. She said she felt no obligation to protect him simply because he was family.
In a 2009 interview with Larry King promoting her book My Life on the D-List, Griffin reiterated her allegation that Kenneth was a pedophile. When King asked how she knew, she claimed that he behaved in sexually inappropriate ways toward her when she was very young.
She recalled that when she was under 10 years old, he would allegedly climb into her bed, cuddle her, and whisper things she described as unsettling. Griffin said that if someone had walked in and seen a grown man lying in bed with a young child in that manner, it would have appeared disturbing and wrong.
She added that she later became estranged from him, and told King that at one point her father confronted Kenneth about his behavior.
Griffin recalled her father telling Kenneth, “Kathleen believes you’re a pedophile, and that’s why she’s cut ties with you.”
She said Kenneth’s response to their father was simply, “Well, I do what I do,” which Griffin noted she did not see as an appropriate reaction.
She went on to say that her mother endured immense pain throughout her life, adding that her late brother Kenny ultimately died in her arms. Griffin said his struggles caused significant hardship for their entire family.
