Rachel McAdams states that the ‘Mean Girls’ reunion commercial didn’t align with her interests.

Rachel McAdams avoids getting involved in commercials. In a recent reunion of the original “Mean Girls” cast for a Walmart Black Friday advertisement, McAdams, aged 45, was the sole Plastic member who did not return to her iconic role from the beloved film. (Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried all took part in the nostalgic promotion.)

I must admit, I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about participating in a commercial, if I’m completely honest,” McAdams confessed in an interview with Variety published on Wednesday, December 20. “I’ve never ventured into commercials before, and it just didn’t align with my preferences.”

The actress also revealed that she was unaware that many of her former co-stars had agreed to participate. Alongside Lohan, 37, Chabert, 41, and Seyfried, 38, Rajiv Surenda (Kevin Gnapoor) and Daniel Franzese (Damian) also made surprise appearances.

“I wasn’t aware that everyone was on board. Naturally, I would always cherish the opportunity to participate in a Mean Girls reunion and spend time with my Plastics, but I discovered that later,” McAdams shared.

The Walmart advertisement arrived as fans eagerly anticipate the new Mean Girls film, which is based on the musical adaptation of the original movie. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 12, 2024. Tina Fey, who wrote the screenplay for both the new installment and its predecessor, will reprise her role as math teacher Mrs. Norbury, and Tim Meadows will return as principal Mr. Duvall.

However, McAdams is graciously passing the Queen Bee torch to a new generation; Reneé Rapp is taking on the role of the new Regina George.

“Tina and I explored a few ideas, but ultimately, it was challenging to make it all come together,” McAdams told Variety, confirming her absence from the 2024 film. “I was completely open to whatever direction she wanted to take, and I believe the direction it’s headed in will be fantastic. I can’t wait to see it.

In a March interview with Entertainment Tonight, McAdams had previously commended Rapp, who is 23 years old.

“I believe she can do no wrong,” McAdams effused. “She’s incredible. She’s already surpassed me with her singing voice. I’m eagerly anticipating her interpretation of the role. It’s a fantastic character, so much fun to portray. I wish her a wonderful experience with it, and I’m eagerly looking forward to witnessing it.

During an interview later conducted by ET’s Denny Directo earlier this month, Rapp was presented with a video of McAdams’ remarks.

“She’s incredibly cool. She’s amazing. I watched this, and I was incredibly excited,” Rapp expressed in reaction. “I adore her. I’m completely enamored with her.
