Joy D. Calloway is officially the new President & CEO of Black Women’s Health Imperative.

Leveraging her extensive nonprofit expertise and commitment to values-based leadership, Joy D. Calloway now serves as President & CEO of the Black Women’s Health Imperative.
Prior to this role, she led the National Medical Association (NMA) as Executive Director, the oldest and largest professional body representing Black physicians in the U.S.
“Leading BWHI is sacred work,” Calloway shared in a press release. “For decades, this organization has raised its voice when others stayed silent—turning the realities of Black women’s health into policy, action, and power. My goal is to build on that legacy, amplify what’s working, and drive us closer to the future we deserve. When we center those most impacted, we create solutions that uplift everyone.”
Calloway previously led Planned Parenthood of Greater New York through a critical transition, where she strengthened operations, fostered cultural improvements, and rebuilt public trust. She also served as CEO of New Center Community Mental Health Services in Detroit and established Oakland County, Michigan’s first Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).
“Joy Calloway is a rare leader—visionary, grounded, and deeply connected to the communities we serve,” said Barbara J. Brown, Ph.D., chair of BWHI’s board of directors. “Her appointment represents not just a new chapter, but our continued rise as a force for accountability, policy reform, and cultural change. She embodies not only experience, but purpose. I am confident she will guide this movement with the courage, compassion, and conviction it demands.”
Since its founding in 1983 by health activist Byllye Avery, the Black Women’s Health Imperative has been a driving voice for Black women’s health—shaping policy, advancing culturally relevant research, and delivering programs that uplift wellness nationwide.
