Woman Celebrates Her 110th Birthday
By Extra-Ordinary Women
In a community room nestled within an apartment complex in Cleveland, a vibrant scene unfolds. Balloons of assorted colors sway gently, bright tablecloths adorn the tables, and the centerpiece, a magnificent cake, commands attention.
What’s the occasion, you might wonder? Well, it’s a party—a birthday party to be exact, and it’s dedicated to celebrating a truly extraordinary woman who has reached a remarkable milestone in her life.
Marie Cheatham, the guest of honor, reflects on her special day with a radiant smile. “It’s a blessing,” she says, her voice filled with gratitude. “I thank God for it.”
This isn’t just any birthday, though. The reason for Marie’s elation is her 110th birthday, a feat that’s nothing short of awe-inspiring. Yes, you read that correctly—Marie has gracefully navigated through an astonishing 11 decades of life.
Marie, a mother of six and a cherished friend to many, revels in the company of others. “When I see some of my old friends, it makes me feel real good,” she tells us, her eyes twinkling with memories and joy.
The secret to her remarkable longevity is not shrouded in mystery but rooted in the values instilled in her since childhood. “She grew up in Hawkinsville, Georgia,” shares Marie’s daughter, Janice Harrell. “I think that’s part of the reason that she’s lived as long as she has because, on the farm, you know, you go to bed early, you get up early, you get exercised by doing your chores, you grow your own food to eat, and so it was a healthy lifestyle.”
Marie isn’t one to hold back her thoughts, and her candidness is endearing. “You can look at my face and say, ‘Oh, she doesn’t like it,'” she quips with a hearty laugh.
One thing is certain: Marie is the life of the party. “Oh, she loves to dance,” Janice reveals with affection. “She was dancing on her hundredth birthday.”
Marie chimes in, “I love music. I like music!”
According to Janice, the greatest lesson her mother ever imparted was the importance of resilience and moving forward. “I think the influence that she has over her family and her friends is that she doesn’t sit down and feel sorry for herself,” Janice reflects. “Particularly, since she grew up in the South, and during those times, you are giving because everybody knew that they could always go to her house and get a meal no matter what. She was always willing to share whatever she had, be it a little bit or a lot.”
Marie Cheatham’s 110th birthday celebration is not only a testament to her enduring spirit but also a testament to the profound impact she has had on those fortunate enough to know her. Her life serves as a reminder that hard work, resilience, and a generous spirit can indeed lead to a long and fulfilling journey through the decades.
