Dr Christina Malamateniou, a skilled radiographer, has been bestowed with the esteemed title of City’s Extraordinary Woman for the year 2023.

Dr. Christina Malamateniou, a researcher and academic, has been recognized as one of City, University of London’s Extraordinary Women. She joins a distinguished group of women at City who are being celebrated for their remarkable achievements in their studies or work.

Dr. Malamateniou has made significant contributions to the field of radiography, including pioneering an autism-friendly MRI scan, exploring the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on radiography academics and practitioners, and leading research on the development of ethical artificial intelligence (AI) tools in radiology.

As the Postgraduate Programme Director for Radiography at City, Dr. Malamateniou oversees both master’s and PhD programs and leads various research projects nationally and internationally. She is also dedicated to supporting the next generation of radiographers and has been leading the national research mentoring scheme for radiographers for the past seven years.

Expressing her gratitude for being named one of City’s Extraordinary Women, Dr. Malamateniou acknowledged the support she has received from the City community and her colleagues. Professor Juliet John, Vice President (Education) and Senior Diversity Ambassador for Gender, commended Dr. Malamateniou’s inspiring contributions as a researcher and educator. She highlighted Dr. Malamateniou’s patient-centered approach to AI in radiography, which aligns with City’s values of inclusivity and human-centered scientific and healthcare practices.

Dr. Malamateniou’s career in radiography combines her passion for helping others and her interest in technological innovation. She pursued her education and clinical experience in radiography and medical imaging in Greece before completing her PhD in perinatal and neonatal MRI at Imperial College London. Her research led her to focus on improving the experiences of patients, including those with autism, during MRI scans, and she has played a crucial role in making MRI scans more person-centered and accessible.

Furthermore, Dr. Malamateniou advocates for the safe and effective implementation of AI in radiography. She is actively involved in designing AI governance, researching the impact of AI on radiographers’ careers, providing AI education, and researching AI adoption. She is a chairperson of AI working and advisory groups at the Society and College of Radiographers and contributes to the development of auditable standards for AI in healthcare.

Dr. Malamateniou has redesigned the radiography program at City and launched the pioneering “Artificial Intelligence for Radiographers” module, attracting students from around the world. Her work combines technological innovation with a focus on patient-centered care, and she believes that AI has the potential to revolutionize healthcare if implemented ethically and in line with clinical needs and governance.
