Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary Breaks 42-Year Dry Spell with Emotional Emmy Win as First Black Female Comedy Lead Actress.
On Monday, Christina Applegate, Rachel Brosnahan, Natasha Lyonne, and Jenna Ortega were all vying for the prestigious award for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

Quinta Brunson has just achieved a historic milestone!
At the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, the creator and star of Abbott Elementary accomplished a groundbreaking feat. She made history as the first Black woman in 42 years to receive the distinguished honor of winning outstanding lead actress in a comedy.
Overwhelmed with emotions, she expressed her gratitude during her acceptance speech. “Thank you so much. I don’t know why I’m so emotional right now. I think it’s just the significance of it all, reminiscent of the legendary Carol Burnett,” she shared.
She continued with heartfelt enthusiasm, “I am incredibly thankful and overwhelmed with joy. Creating Abbott Elementary and having the opportunity to live out my dream by performing in comedy means the world to me. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I have an immense love for comedy, and this moment brings me immeasurable happiness.”
As her emotions flowed freely, she admitted, “I didn’t prepare a speech because I honestly didn’t anticipate this. Oh, my goodness. My love extends to my dear mother, my father, my cherished sisters and brothers, and my entire family. I am deeply grateful for my loving husband, and I am just overflowing with love for my exceptional cast and the show Abbott Elementary itself. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
It’s essential to note that the last Black woman to receive this honor was Isabel Sanford, recognized for her role in The Jeffersons back in 1961. Quinta Brunson’s victory, coupled with Ayo Edebiri’s win, marked a significant milestone as it was the first time that two Black actresses clinched the two comedy categories in the same year.
At the age of 34, Quinta Brunson assumes the role of Janine Teagues, a dedicated Philadelphia schoolteacher, in the ABC series. This year, she has earned three Emmy nominations, further solidifying her presence in the entertainment industry. These nominations include recognition in the comedy series category for her work on Abbott Elementary, a show she not only stars in but also created, writes for, and serves as an executive producer. Additionally, she garnered a nomination in the outstanding guest actress in a comedy series category for her memorable hosting stint on Saturday Night Live.
Reflecting on her creative journey, Brunson shared her motivation during a conversation with Oprah Winfrey last year, saying, “Performing, writing, creating, producing—I feel like I’m still doing it for my family.” She emphasized how her family has been a vital source of inspiration and feedback for her work. Growing up in a multigenerational household, they would collectively find joy in shared laughter, despite their diverse senses of humor and varying educational backgrounds. This familial connection to humor and the shows that brought them together has had a profound impact on Brunson’s creative pursuits.
Fans of Abbott Elementary can look forward to its return for a third season on February 7th, where the storyline will continue to unfold after the eagerly anticipated kiss between Janine and Gregory, portrayed by the outstanding supporting comedy actor nominee, Tyler James Williams.
Brunson emerged victorious in a highly competitive field, besting notable nominees such as Christina Applegate from “Dead to Me,” Rachel Brosnahan of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Natasha Lyonne, known for “Poker Face,” and Jenna Ortega from “Wednesday.”
Christina Applegate, who received her eighth Emmy nomination in 2023 at the age of 52, delivered a remarkable performance in Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” In the series, she portrayed a widow determined to uncover the identity of the driver responsible for her husband’s death. Applegate openly shared how working on the show played a crucial role in her coping with the challenging diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in August 2021.
Reflecting on her experience, she explained on The Kelly Clarkson Show, “The beauty of ‘Dead to Me’ is that it provided me with this unique platform to address it, where I didn’t have to maintain a facade all the time, crack jokes, or put on a brave face. I could allow myself to break down during a scene, and it was genuinely me. It was my soul going through a heartbreaking process, albeit unfortunately, in front of the world. But it was a cathartic and beautiful experience.”
Following the conclusion of “Dead to Me” after its third season in November 2022, Applegate expressed her uncertainty about returning to on-screen work due to her battle with MS. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she candidly stated, “I probably won’t be working on-camera again.”

Brosnahan, aged 33, established herself as a consistent presence at the Emmy Awards throughout the five-season duration of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Her outstanding portrayal of Miriam “Midge” Maisel earned her the title of outstanding lead actress in a comedy series in 2018, with a total of six nominations accrued over the show’s run.
The conclusion of Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” coincided with its fifth season, providing closure to Midge’s comedic journey. Reflecting on her character’s evolution, Brosnahan shared her insights with Entertainment Weekly, stating, “She’s proud of what she achieved, especially considering she initially had her dreams shattered. She’s proud of her resilience and the way she rebuilt her life, venturing into uncharted territory she never knew was possible. Moreover, she discovered profound partnerships and profound love, both with Susie and in the realm of stand-up comedy. She takes pride in her accomplishments and feels a sense of fulfillment. Whether she’s truly happy remains uncertain.”

At the age of 44, Natasha Lyonne secured her fifth Emmy nomination for her role in Peacock’s “Poker Face.” In the series, her character possesses the unique ability to discern whether someone is being truthful or not. Expressing her enthusiasm for the show’s format, Lyonne shared, “Returning to a case-of-the-week style and having the audience engaged with the work over an extended period was an incredibly enjoyable experience.”
Furthermore, the acclaimed star of “Russian Doll” received recognition for her performance in “Poker Face” at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. She was nominated in the category of best performance by a female actor in a television series, musical, or comedy. Ultimately, the award went to Ayo Edebiri for her outstanding work in “The Bear.”

At the age of 21, Jenna Ortega earned her inaugural Emmy nomination this year, all thanks to her remarkable performance in the immensely popular series “Wednesday.” Following its premiere in November 2022, this show, inspired by the Addams Family, achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing “Stranger Things” to become the English-language TV series on Netflix with the highest number of hours viewed in a single week.
In January of last year, Netflix officially greenlit a second season for “Wednesday,” and Jenna Ortega has hinted at what viewers can expect from this upcoming installment. She mentioned that the show’s sophomore season will delve deeper into its eerie and supernatural elements.
“We’ve made the deliberate choice to embrace the horror elements of the series a bit more,” she revealed to Variety. “Considering the lighthearted nature of the show and its inclusion of vampires, werewolves, and superpowers, we believe it’s essential not to take ourselves too seriously.”
