Debra Wilson, once a breakout star of MADtv, looks nearly unrecognizable today as she opens up about how she “lost everything” after the series ended.

Debra Wilson became one of MADtv’s standout stars in the late ’90s and early 2000s, thanks to her iconic impressions of Oprah Winfrey and Whitney Houston.
But after leaving the sketch comedy show in 2003 amid a salary dispute, the comedian says her life began to unravel. “Everything was a challenge,” the 64-year-old shared in a new interview with Hype+ this week.
“I wasn’t getting much work, my marriage was already falling apart, and I couldn’t hold on to the home I had owned for nearly 12 years,” she recalled.
Debra Wilson said she felt like a failure during that period, but shared that losing everything ultimately sparked a spiritual awakening that brought her closer to God.
Debra Wilson was one of the original cast members of MADtv, joining at its 1995 debut and remaining for eight seasons before leaving in 2003. She said she stepped away because she felt her creative and financial growth had stalled, adding that the decision also came from a desire for personal and spiritual growth, she told Hype+.
Though she exited the series in 2003, Wilson continued making guest appearances until Fox Broadcasting Companycanceled the show in 2009. During her run, she became known for memorable impressions of Oprah Winfrey and Whitney Houston, as well as her original character Bunifa Latifah Halifah Sharifa Jackson, roles that also led to appearances in projects like American Dad! and Scary Movie 4.
While she faced career challenges after MADtv, Wilson ultimately reinvented herself as one of Hollywood’s most successful voice actors.
Debra Wilson has built an impressive voice acting career, lending her talents to major animated projects such as Marvel Zombies, Eyes of Wakanda, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, Star Trek, and Mortal Kombat Legends, among others. She has also found major success in video games, voicing characters in hit franchises like Destiny, Marvel’s Spider-Man, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, The Walking Dead, and Final Fantasy.
Wilson isn’t the only major talent to emerge from MADtv, which also helped launch the careers of Artie Lange, Bobby Lee, Nicole Sullivan, and Jordan Peele.
Launched by Fox Broadcasting Company in 1995 as a rival to Saturday Night Live, the show earned a reputation for edgy, politically incorrect humor. While ratings were often mixed and critics were divided, its bold style helped it carve out a lasting place in comedy history.
Despite its early struggles, MADtv developed a loyal cult following and has since been reappraised by many as one of the greatest sketch comedy shows ever made. A reboot launched by The CW in 2016 with a new cast lasted only one season before being canceled.
Some original cast members reunited last year on the TigerBelly podcast hosted by Bobby Lee, where they reflected on pay during the show’s run. Lee said salaries at Fox Broadcasting Company were modest, revealing he started at $4,000 per episode before rising to $20,000 by the end, while noting newer cast members in comedy often make even less today.
Debra Wilson shared that her pay eventually reached $15,000 per episode, but said it became a ceiling with little room for further growth, despite her status as an original cast member.
