History has been made in Iowa! For only the second time in 70 years, a Black woman has been crowned Miss Iowa.

McKenzie Kerry made history by winning Miss Iowa 2024, becoming only the second Black woman to claim the title in over 70 years.

Twenty-six-year-old McKenzie Kerry has made history by winning Miss Iowa USA 2024, becoming just the second Black woman to do so in over 70 years. In a state where over 95% of the population is white, this is a significant milestone. As of 2021, African Americans made up only about 4% of Iowa’s population.

“When we think about the role models in our community, it’s crucial that Black women and girls have someone they can look up to,” Kerry shared with local TV station KCCI. “I’m proud to represent myself and my Black heritage.”

As noted on The Miss USA website, Kerry is a corporate trainer, community leader, and professional cheerleader. She graduated magna cum laude from UNC Charlotte with a bachelor’s degree in business. Beyond her role as a learning and development consultant at Principal Financial Group, she’s also the owner and founder of Twenty-Eight Minna, a luxury jewelry brand for everyday people.

For her final look, Kerry wore gold mesh hoop earrings designed by Aminna Taylor, a local Black-owned designer who launched her business just two years ago.

“It’s challenging as a small business. We have to work extra hard to build brand recognition and prove that we’re a legitimate company,” Taylor shared. “Whenever someone wears our pieces or leaves a review, it really helps show that we’re a great company to work with. This was an incredible opportunity for me.”

Kerry intends to continue using her platform to support small businesses and uplift Black women.

“Supporting the community is amazing, but it’s even more special to support a Black woman who’s working hard and has created something incredible,” Kerry said.

Kerry competed for Miss USA in Hollywood, California, on August 4th, 2024. Michigan’s Alma Cooper won Miss USA 2024 at the 73rd annual competition.
