Selena Gomez Makes a Magical Comeback in ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Revival.

Prepare to unearth those enchanted wands.

Disney is set to revive a cherished classic: Wizards of Waverly Place, the show that catapulted Selena Gomez to fame and provided a whimsical twist on magic, misadventures, and family enjoyment. Deadline reports that Gomez and her co-star David Henrie will serve as executive producers for the upcoming series, with Gomez confirmed to make an appearance in the pilot episode. Meanwhile, Henrie will have a recurring role, reprising his character Justin Russo as an adult.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the series follows Justin after he “abandoned his wizarding powers for an everyday, magic-free life with his family.” A young wizard “finds him and asks him for help in both training and ensuring the future of the wizard world.” Gomez will return to her role as Alex Russo. There’s no word yet on whether or not the show’s other cast members will be coming to the show. The sitcom also starred David DeLuise, Maria Canals-Barrera, Jennifer Stone, and Jake T. Austin.

The new version of WOWP will air on Disney Channel if the network orders it to series.

The original Wizards of Waverly Place graced Disney Channel’s screens from 2007 to 2012, sharing the spotlight with some of the network’s most iconic series such as Hannah Montana, Lizzie McGuire, and That’s So Raven. These beloved shows have been in the spotlight recently, with That’s So Raven receiving a reboot titled Raven’s Home and plans for a Lizzie McGuire revival announced but subsequently canceled in 2020.

In an episode of the Wizards of Waverly Pod, a podcast dedicated to re-watching the show and hosted by Jennifer Stone and David DeLuise, the series’ showrunner, Peter Murrieta, revealed that Alex’s sexual orientation was intended to be bisexual. However, due to constraints during that era, they didn’t have the opportunity to delve into this aspect of her character.

He expressed his desire to explore the evident connection between Alex and a character portrayed by Hayley Kiyoko, stating, “I wished we could have delved deeper into what was quite apparent to many of us – the relationship between Stevie and Alex. We weren’t able to do so at that time, but it was evident to all of us what that relationship meant. It would have been an enjoyable storyline.”
