17-Year-Old Chicago Prodigy Earns Ph.D. and Pioneers Local STEAM Program.

In Chicago, while many 17-year-olds are occupied with college applications, Dorothy Tillman, hailing from the South Side of the city, has accomplished a remarkable feat – she has achieved a Ph.D.

Dorothy, a resident of the South Side, has recently concluded her dissertation defense at Arizona State University, earning a Ph.D. in Integrated Behavioral Health. Notably, she has already acquired her high school diploma, a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and now, her doctoral degree. However, Dorothy emphasizes that her objective is not merely to amass degrees, but rather to establish a platform for future generations to aspire to ambitious goals.

Dorothy established the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, with “STEAM” standing for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

“I always felt that I had to choose between being in an arts program or a STEM program. I never felt like I could have both simultaneously. By integrating these disciplines and emphasizing that the right brain and left brain are interdependent, I believe that’s what sets it apart,” she explained. “I prioritize curriculum quality over quantity.”

While the institute offers programs, initiatives, and events throughout the year, the focal point is the summer camp program. Notably, some of Dorothy’s camp attendees have gone on to launch their own businesses.

At the age of 14, Tridia Davis is embarking on the journey toward her dream.

“They guide us through the process of creating music and beats, teaching us how to write and various other aspects, which is incredibly beneficial,” Tridia expressed.

As for her mentor, despite her remarkable accomplishments thus far, she remains committed to thinking ambitiously.

“It’s about having unwavering self-confidence to the extent that nobody can undermine your self-perception or your aspirations,” Dorothy remarked.
