Embrace Seven Creative Ways to Commemorate Juneteenth.

For many years, Juneteenth has been a cherished occasion among Black communities throughout the United States. However, now, an even broader range of individuals have the opportunity to partake in the festivities and embrace the significance of this day.

Juneteenth, also referred to as Black Independence Day, Freedom Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, or Jubilee Day, has been traditionally observed on June 19 in Black communities across the nation. This commemoration has taken various forms, including parades, rodeos, and barbecues. However, since President Joe Biden designated it as a federal holiday two years ago, new customs have emerged.

Now, the celebration of Juneteenth encompasses grand festivals, vibrant block parties, and intimate cookouts featuring red drinks. With a plethora of options available, newcomers to Juneteenth may find themselves contemplating how best to partake in the festivities. Should one opt for a relaxing day at home, attend a local parade, or consider hosting an annual cookout this weekend? The choices are boundless.

Whether you are a novice to Juneteenth celebrations or have been honoring the day for several years, here are seven suggestions to establish fresh customs in conjunction with this momentous occasion.

Give Texas the recognition it deserves

Juneteenth is a significant occasion that specifically commemorates the moment when Texas, the last region in the country, learned about President Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had freed the slaves two years earlier. Since then, the state of Texas has been at the forefront of exuberant celebrations on this day. If you’re unable to physically attend a celebration in Texas, you can still pay homage virtually by immersing yourself in the music of Beyoncé or Megan Thee Stallion, delving into the state’s historical connection to Juneteenth, watching Black westerns, and, of course, enjoying some delicious barbecue.

Embrace the spirit of togetherness

If you and your loved ones have the day off for Juneteenth, consider hosting a cookout, participating in a street fair, or joining a block party. Engaging with your community is a powerful way to honor the essence of this day. Juneteenth symbolizes the historical lack of communication and isolation experienced by Black people in America. You can defy that legacy by coming together with those you cherish or by making new connections. As a bonus idea, make an effort to sip on something red as it has gained significant symbolism in Juneteenth celebrations.

Organize a gathering for family or ‘framily’

While it might not be feasible to plan for this year, considering the increasing number of individuals who have the day off from work and the summertime break for schools, the extended weekend of Juneteenth could serve as an ideal occasion to host a reunion for your Black family or chosen “framily.” Choose a location that holds significance for your relatives or explore a new destination that allows everyone to come together and appreciate the importance of being able to embrace your loved ones closely.

Support Black-owned businesses

Corporate America swiftly embraced Juneteenth, but instead of contributing to the commercialization of the holiday, make a conscious choice to patronize Black-owned businesses. By spending your money with these enterprises, you can tangibly give back to the Black community and support its growth.

Indulge in delectable cuisine!

Juneteenth has become synonymous with mouthwatering food, possibly due to its origins in Texas. Make eating well a priority on this day. Explore recipes for Texas barbecue and traditional Black Southern dishes. Establishing a special menu and preparing it each year can be a delightful way to create a personal celebration.

Prioritize self-care

Honoring our ancestors and those who were once enslaved can be achieved by embracing the freedom to simply do nothing. Turn off your alarm, spend the day in your cozy pajamas, catch up on your favorite Black films and TV shows, and indulge in some well-deserved rest and relaxation before the summer kicks into full swing in just a few days. Use this day as an opportunity for personal rejuvenation, to unwind, and truly focus on your own well-being.

Engage in a day of introspection

While Juneteenth is a commemoration of Black liberation from slavery in the United States, it is understandable that this day can evoke heavy emotions for some individuals. If you find yourself in that category, embrace it and allocate the day for reflection. Explore virtual Juneteenth programs like theGrio’s “Freedom Forward: Juneteenth Special” on Monday, June 19, at 2 p.m. on theGrio.com and various social media platforms.
